WordPress Tips

by Jack Humphrey on Dec 26

wpvoteI found a neat site yesterday called WPVote.  It is a Digg-style site strictly for blogs posts from around the web on WordPress how-to topics.

Rather than starting another Digg site with a general scope, WPVote makes novel use of a Digg script by keeping it to one topic and one topic only.  The result is a repository of very useful information for people looking for specific things to do with their WordPress blogs.

2 years ago I said there would be more “vertical” social news sites.  To my surprise there haven’t been as many as I thought there would be.  Just a lot of people trying to be Digg, which is kind of dumb.

WPVote is the kind of vertical, narrowly-focused, helpful social news site I envisioned.  So far the best I’ve seen at staying on topic, uncluttered with off-topic spam, and actually being a great resource for a large group interested in one thing.

If you post on WordPress issues, it’s also a good place to be found.

Nice find Jack… With all of us WP fanatics trolling the web, this micro-network should do well. I am heading there now :)

Hopefully legit WP plugin developers and theme designers use it as a service to provide great tuts and not blast it with marketing pitches.

I just checked it out, clicked on a story, and all the comments are baiscally spam. See:

If only they would moderate this a little better, because it has alot of potential.

Great review Jack… Jean-Baptiste is behind this site and is a great coder. He recently had a guest post on SmashingMagazine.com that had a great list of very helpful WP hacks.

This is a great idea and a very good resource.

As you have rightly pointed out Jack this site is ‘a great resource for a large group interested in one thing’.

I hope they will tackle the spam comments problem soon. Just removing the ‘recent comment’ section from the sidebar can improve the value of the site.

Yeah the spam is awful on the site right now. If I were the owner I’d just disable commenting. The biggest attractive feature is the links to WP tips on other blogs – we don’t need another “community” feature.

    Great find, Jack – thanks!

It’s a goldmine of WP information.

I just read the post on 404 errors that can pop up after placing extra security around the wp-admin folder (which I did a while ago and haven’t experienced any problems with).

One of the things that post points out is that the majority of hacked WP blogs are NOT accessed via the admin login – there are other doors that people leave open:

For example – anyone can get your FTP login by intercepting your details when you’re FTP’ing to your blog, or through spyware on your PC. Once they have those it’s open season.

For anyone concerned with WP security it’s a great post. It’s already bookmarked! :-)

    Cheers,

    Martin.

These focus popular links sites can be great. The key is getting a community that is active and sensible. The hardest part for very focused topics is building a large enough community that voting provides a valuable input (if only a handful of people vote it doesn’t do much good).

    Jack,

This article inspired me. I got a little bored / curious / adventurous over the holidays and decided to create my own Digg style site.

It’s not nearly as focused as the WP site you mention but I think i may really connect with a lot of bloggers.

Check it out and let me know what you think…
