What Labels Fit You?

by Anissa Wardell on Jan 13

I was reading on AdAge, and Pete Blackshaw wrote a piece on the 20 labels of 2009 (the more official title: “Top 20 Labels, Buzzwords to Describe Our Curious Stampede to the Social-Media and Mobile Future”), and I thought I would share a few of them with you. But before I do, I thought it was interesting to point out that we all have labels we give things, and many of us fit into these labels whether or not we really want too. Take a good long look at Pete’s list of labels to see how crazy people are (of course you and I are not crazy!).

My Favorites:

CURBCASTING: The almost unstoppable cacophony of loud voices barking all manner of silliness into the airwaves thanks to Bluetooth devices. You see this on every street corner and curb.

TWITSTOP: A bathroom detour from a meeting or conversation in order to check e-mail, Twitter or the latest and greatest via an app. (Pete: Swear on the Bible, I don’t do this … but I’m told lots of others do. Anissa: I ditto this, as I work from home and don’t have to go into an office, thank goodness!)

SPURNED MEDIA: Just like it sounds, earned media that goes horribly negative, invades otherwise pristine search results or bleeds into traditional media. Bad customer service is a top driver of “spurned media.”

BRAND TEASE: A consumer who “friends” or “fans” a brand, only to never return for a second date. Brands feed the cycle by forgetting to court the consumer with engaging, interesting or sustaining content or value.

BLOG DODGER: Someone who has abandoned his or her blog for Twitter or some other lower-hassle social-media substitute. This was big in 2009, and we’ll likely see much more of it in 2010.

Okay, so I get this last one, only because I understand that blogging can be a job and if you are not up for being an authority or if it isn’t fun, that turning and running to a social site seems the best option…but honestly! Serious? You are going to give all your hard earned time, energy and thought to a social site, and have no real estate of your own to host your valuable content too? If that is the case then Thank You! You have just opened up more opportunity for me and others who are really trying to make our websites produce great traffic which leads to conversions….etc, etc. Enough said…I think we all get my opinion on leaving your blog behind for a social site who totally gains the benefits of your information (not saying you cannot make money by just being on a social site, but why give your info to someone else…).

So, what is your favorite label? Even if it wasn’t part of Pete’s list, we would all love to hear your thoughts!

How about ‘Going forward’ being listed as the ultimate trash buzzword heard in company planning sessions through 2009?

A completely meaningless crutch-word to make the mundane sound important.

Going forward, looks like 2010′s going to be a great year Jack :)

I got a new one.”Faceapp Loafer” or “Faceapp Loafing” Definition: A person or the act spending all day sending their friends new Facebook Apps

Example: Amy just found some White Mystery Eggs and wants to say thank you!
Amy just harvested their chicken coop and found some White Mystery Eggs, and wants to thank their friends for feeding the chickens!!

Going forward we might see a declining trend in the use of the phrase “going forward.”
