Want More Traffic? Send More Traffic To Other People!

by Jack Humphrey on Feb 22

Jack’s Rule:  If you want to be a big deal, help other people be big deals.

I can call that “my” rule, but it is actually how the blogosphere has worked since the first blogs.  I have laid this strategy out before somewhere in the archives of FTR, but I’m going to do it from a slightly different angle this time.

Use Google Alerts to find any and every place where people are talking about you, your products or services, and any of your sites or social profiles.  When someone writes about you or links to you, go and submit their post to StumbleUpon, Twitter about it, and see what else you can do to send that person some traffic.

This takes a couple minutes to do per instance, but reaps large rewards over time…

1.  It sends a message to the people writing about you that you care, are thankful, and willing to reward them for talking about you.  That’s the “Pavlov’s Blog” rule of buzz marketing.  Get people used to talking about you more than the competition because, when they do, there is a positive reward for doing so.

2.  It sends you traffic and notoriety because, of course, you are buzzing a page that talks about and links to you.  It just happens to be someone else’s site.  Now you don’t have to worry about getting banned from social sites for submitting your own posts.  Just get people talking about you and submit theirs.

Use your information overlord system in this way, and you will become a bigger deal, faster, by helping others around you become bigger deals in their own right.  Blog marketing is a massive back-scratching party of traffic sharing.  Sharpen your nails and get scratching and watch how that traffic and attention blows back in your direction!

    Jack you are totally right.

I made this edgy video about Ali Brown – and put a straight (non-affiliate) link to her – she must be kinda hard to get hold of because I was almost certain she’d be howling at me by now?

Still most people are very happy to get link love from a straight post link.

I have a guess as to why you haven’t heard from her, lol. I thought you made that video with her consent! I’m sure she’s seen it. :)

Great advice Jack. I’ll have to look into Google Alerts — another tool that I haven’t stumbled onto yet! I’m glad to have found your blog. Looking forward to mining through the archives.

Terry – does it matter if it is to your face or behind your back? (The answer is “no”) As long as they’re talking about you!

I visited 5 of the top blogs in my niche, took the time to learn the owners name, and really prowled around. Then I did a ‘site review’ on them. I looked at them not as competitors, but simply contributors to a shared passion and body of knowledge.

Having that point of view, and giving the props and links freely and first, has had huge paybacks in terms of links, reciprocation, and new relationships. This is now part of my posting routine.
