Some readers may have noticed a new kind of comment showing up here at Friday Traffic Report. I just installed a killer plugin called Chat Catcher which watches Twitter, Friendfeed, and other social sites for any conversation about your site.
When it catches someone saying nice (or not so nice) things about you on Twitter, it places the comment in moderation in your Wordpress admin. If you like what they had to say, you approve it like a regular comment and they pick up a link from your blog to their Twitter account or whatever account they posted their comment to.
Here’s what it looks like in your comments area:

You can choose to either show social comments as trackbacks or as regular comments with avatar and explanation of where this comment came from.
What does this mean?
1. More comments on your blog - lots of people talk about blogs outside of the blog itself in social sites. Capture the conversation and place it in your comments to show ALL the activity your blog content generates around the web!
2. Mr. Sneaky, my alter ego, says I should go to Google and search on the phrase “posted using chat catcher” to find all the blogs using this and Twitter about them. It’s far easier to Tweet than it is to comment on each and every blog directly.
(Note, Mr. Sneaky doesn’t always have the best ideas, but this one is safe. People will love you talking about them and linking to their site.
3. As other Mr. Sneakies pick up on this, more people will start talking about your posts than before because they know they’ll get a link out of it. Which is why you should moderate your comments, because the Mr. Buttheads will come out to spam this too.

Jack, you seem to have switched to BackType; or are you using them both? Any reason for the change if that’s what you’ve done?
Thanks,
Scott.
@Scott – I like Backtype better because it catches Tweets about your posts really well in addition to outside comments of other kinds. I know I made a pretty quick switch from Disqus, but I’m much happier with this one by far.
