Tricky But White Hat Link Building Technique

by Jack Humphrey on Jun 5

Disclaimer:  This can be massively abused.  Please note that I am not at all condoning the use of this tactic to spam blogs!

Finding CommentLuv blogs to comment on

This is pretty obvious once you soak it in, so there isn’t much detail to this tip.  CommentLuv is a WordPress plugin that allows your blog to search for your commentators’ last blog post.  (if they have a blog and they put their blog address in the URL field when making a comment on your blog)

CommentLuv will go to their site, check to see if its a blog, check to see their last post, grab the link and the title of that post, and come back to YOUR blog and put the title of their last post which is also linked.

You can go through some of my older posts and see it in action or check out my post on the CommentLuv plugin to see how it works.

CommentLUV links are pretty valuable, even if they are no-follow links.

I have noticed a significant increase in the number of clicks from blog comments I’ve made on sites using CommentLuv.  Obviously, people are given a convenient link to click on with the title of my last post which sells the click well if I’ve made a good headline (title) for the post.

Given that fact, I have done searches in my niche to find out which of my fellow internet marketing bloggers are using CommentLuv.

Here’s how to Google and find all the CommentLuvers in your niche:

keyword “Enable CommentLuv which will”

Put your umbrella keyword for your niche in the keyword area.  It can be a phrase like “blog marketing” or just one keyword like “marketing.”

You will turn up dozens if not hundreds of blogs using this plugin and talking about your topic.

Now you can go get into the discussion on these blogs (making REAL and VALUABLE comments!) and also pick up that extra link CommentLuv puts on the bottom of your comments.

Food for Thought:  What other popular WordPress plugins can you think of that work like CommentLuv to do similar searches?

Example:  If there were a popular plugin a lot of bloggers use to reward their most active commentators with a link in their sidebar, (Top 5 Most Active Members, e.g.) you can isolate text from that plugin that is pretty unique, put it in quotes with your keyword as above, and find every blog using that plugin so you can become active on those sites.

CommentLuv seems like just a convenience feature to me… Is there really a value of the extra link vs. the the link that your “name” points to?

But I agree with everyone else. Comments are a great way to build traffic and links as long as you are adding actual value and aren’t doing automated spamming.

This is so true! I receive a lot of traffic from the comments I leave on blogs with CommentLuv enabled. The best way to generate clickthroughs from blog commenting (and the use of CommentLuv) is to provide a comment of value. If you have something to add, suggestions, observations, etc you’ll find people will want to find out more about you and your blog. Whereas if you just write “thanks, great post!” you aren’t really adding much.

‘Thanks for sharing, great post!’ :)

Thanks for the information! I need to pay more attention to what people comment on on my blog. It can be very time consuming but it is important. This was very helpful.

I’ve come across commentluv and keywordluv and have noticed rapid increase in backlinks but not sure about traffic. Keywordluv seems to generate more backlinks than commentluv although I’m not able to tell in which proportions.

Thanks jack for your info. I think the key is, when you do blog walking you have to post your comment which is correlated with the post topic.

Or you can use this trick to find a dofollow blog. Just go to Google and type keyword+”nofollow free”

Many thanks for the CommentLuv. I also use the same tool for my website and it is an excellent tool to add original content as long as you manage the comments. One more thing – the cool feature about CommentLuv… it shows the last post you did before you comment – why is that cool? If you write a post about something related to your website and then comment on CommentLuv in other sites, you will gain extra backlinks to your website! How cool is that?

Here’s another tip: whenever several users have branded your comments as spam, the chance you’ll be on the Akismet’s blacklist will be very high. There IS a way to solve that though!

Go to the contact form at akismet.com and explain the situation properly. If you got branded as a spammer by accident, they’ll remove you off the blacklist.

CommentLuv has been great for my site, it has definitely increased my website traffic. It’s a great idea and I’m really pleased to see more sites including this plug-in on their blog sites. I’m also a big fan of KeywordLuv, that has helped me a lot too.

There are thousands of blogs in the net that has commentluv installed on their commenting platform and it’s really helpful for some webowners to make their website look more livelier with valuable comments. But sadly there are lots of unethical SEO that is abusing these websites making other webowners turn no follow on. Hope that the way of commenting and link building evolve into a much more pleasing and ethical way.

I have been blogging for quite a few months but despite writing some good posts I wasn’t able to attract traffic to my blog. Then I got to know about the SEO plugin through pne of my friends so i tried that. After that ive been concentrating on building up links and find useful plugins to attract Traffic. One of my friends Mansoor Ahmed of Worsttech advised me to make use of KeywordLuv and CommentLuv and the description above was more than enough for me to understand it. The anchor thing in KeywordLuv really appealed me big time. Thanks guys! This really encourages people to comment in a positive way as it should be . . . Hope it pays off! =)

I registered a couple of my sites with the ComLuv network a few days ago. They now give you the ability to select which of your links you want displayed in blog comments. It’s an awesome feature, guys. Give it a try!

Yes, this is an effective tactic but many webmasters have had to disable the CommentLuv plugin due to spam comments. It’s human nature to take shortcuts, but this in turn ruins it for the rest of us who are trying to build up a solid link portfolio by adding value to other sites. Hopefully we’ll see some more innovative plugins in the future to further help curb spam while allowing webmasters to continue rewarding real commentors.

I installed commentluv but quickly realized it wasn’t compatible with Disqus. I did a search and commentluv is working on integrating it, but can’t right now with the way disqus is coded http://comluv.com/news/commentluv-for-disqus-id-js-kit/. Hopefully they will be able to co-exist together and I can use both commenting systems.

Blog commenting shouldn’t just be done to build links for PR and SERPs – it should be done to build your reputation and increase traffic back to your site as well. And a blog post title is likely to get more interest than just an unknown website.

I agree with Krisiti’s statement above me. Blog commenting, if done for the purpose of only getting backlinks doesn’t always pay off, although it shouldn’t be ignored.

I guess main point – add to conversation, preferably something unique :-)

I totally agree that Blog commenting is not all about building links for PR and SERPs sake only. It should also build reputation and pull potential traffic back to your website. Above all, it should be a give and take relationship.
