Website Magazine has just published a Top 50 list of the biggest and busiest social media sites. How many do you have an account with?

I’m on 22 out of 50 so close to halfway but still quite a few I need to take a look at (if I can stand to be in any more)
I’m on Ning overload right now and probably get 5-8 invitations a week to a new Ning site – although I don’t join them all
Not familiar with BlackPlanet and CafeMom – will take a look at those two. Is it necessary to be in all of them do you think Jack?
If noting else I guess it’s a link back to my site which is always helpful but building a reputation in these sites would take a lot of hours on the keyboard!

Diane – definitely not necessary to be on all of them. Some just won’t make sense for any given niche. But there’s always something new to try when you want to test a new site.

Thanks for this list.
When I searched into Google on “top social media sites 2009″ this post was on page 1 of Google for broad match with more than 86 million competing pages.
And it shows up on # 1 position for the term “top 50 social media sites 2009″ broad match with more than 11 million competing pages.
You had mentioned a few times that you don’t spend a whole lot of time on SEO. I wonder if it was the anchor text, post title plus the authority of FTR that got such incredible results.

Sonia – I know it’s probably hard to believe that it was this simple, but I really owe it all to peoples undying need for lists. Not only to read them, but to link to them. By putting this up, and surely doing some blog commenting at the time, I got some anchor links back to the blog post. And people just read it and linked to it.
I would never go out of my way to promote such a post, because it is a post ABOUT a list that I didn’t even compile! So whatever happened to get me those results had to be through the interest in the topic, people linking, and mild keyword placement that was more natural/accidental than purposeful.
But how do you like the “power of the list” for its ability to even get a post ABOUT a list on another site such results? lol Also has to do with site authority why such a post would out rank other similar posts and sometimes, even the original content you are linking to.
I’m just as amazed as anyone when this stuff happens sometimes.
Awesome list, i was not in favor of using social media websites a couple of month before but seeing success faster than other resources and medias, i m believing in the magic spell of these media. Thanks for the list anyways.
