Great tips as always, Jack. Thanks! I love blog comments and RSS feeds. These are super-quick and easy to utilize and give great results.

Jack, Nice use of Utility poster. I KNOW this blog post only took you 3 minutes to compile (including finding the links)

I did the same thing at my blog the other day but with a broader link bait piece: “Internet Marketing Tips”. It was awesome to compile such a useful post in such a short amount of time…and I’m sure that the people I linked to will LOVE me for it.

Oh, and by the way, CommentLuv plug-in? How killer is that?

I just noticed that there is a link to my latest blog post in the comment I just left. WOW! I love that! I’ll be sure to install the plug-in on my blog to encourage comment posting from my subscribers.

Thanks again. I keep coming back to the post often with great content idea. I was reading something you wrote about Digg and how they are mostly into technical stuff and i thought this was really some good insight; get the pulse of the web2.0 that you are submitting to. I was reading a thread on Sphinn about how they are all out- raged
by spammers and the last post rightly pointed out that it was because they are (or were) listed on Social Marker.

You do know a thing or two about MyBlogLog because most of the avatars above are in my friends list. LOL BlogLog that is.

Another social marketing strategy is to use social bookmarking sites to create backlinks to your site.

I have found 15 sites so far that Google will follow back to your site and return a backlink in Google results.

However, think about this: If Digg has 5 million users and the average number of posts, from the Digg top 100 to the user who no longer participates is 1 post per day, that is 5 million posts.

How can you (not you Jack) possibly expect that Google will see your 1 link in Digg in 5 million others as a backlink to your site. In fact if you submit your site to Digg and no one else Diggs it, I have come to feel that is a negative indicator in Digg’s eyes. the worst thing you can do is submit your Digg posts yourself and then get no Diggs.

One of my friends on Social Marketing Central wrote an article that went hot on the Internet. He got like 1500 visitors in a few days and 80 comments. The bad news is that he only got 18 Diggs. Now tell me this: Don’t you think that Google, that has access to the popularity of posts on Digg just like we do, would not see 1500 visitors and 18 Diggs a negative indicator of this blog and the blog post itself?

I can easily get 100 to 200 Diggs for any article I want in Digg in 2 days. I do that through my own strategies and participation.

So social bookmarking if done wrong can actually hurt you. Social marketing is about being social, so be social on social bookmarking sites, don’t just submit you own content and expect that this will bring you results.

Hello,
I’m brand new to Web2.0 and your organisation. Whilst rootling about I came across a remark by Jack to the effect that 90% of commenting is done incorrectly. Is there a blog in your archives that tells how to do it right?

Many Thanks
FEJ

Jack Humphrey Jul 7 at 4:48 am

FEJ,

I’m not sure where that would be or if I wrote one. But I’ll tell you, in short, right now.

Commenting properly means commenting in the spirit that commenting on blogs was intended: to add to the discussion by asking clarifying questions, like you just did, or by helping to add to the original post with your thoughts.

Improper commenting is simply something like this: “Great post.”

Commenting has 2 goals:

1. To engage readers and the other commentators in a discussion that is meaningful enough that a portion of them check out your link.

2. To gain favor with the blog owner who you hope will ALSO check out your site and possibly do a review or send you some type of link after you’ve become a “fixture” on their site – a trusted entity.
