Social Rock Stars, Geeks, and the Oral Tradition

by Jack Humphrey on Dec 30

Becoming a top social “maven” on a social news site is a big deal in some circles. For a marketer looking for attention, it is a windfall if handled correctly.Read about “social rock stars” and one blogger’s deep take on what it means when 40%-50% of the Digg front page is controlled by the Digg Top 100.

The article is entitled “From Geek to Gods: Why Have “Social Rock Stars” Emerged?” Pretty interesting except I am not sure how “geeky” it is to become addicted to being in the limelight by being the know-it-all.The housewife who is on the phone constantly reporting the latest gossip isn’t a geek. She’s just a busy body! :)

Edit: I retract the doubt I felt about labeling people at Digg “geeks.” Just under the story above I found this:

Sex With Robots? Not so far off says author” After seeing this story get 524 Diggs in less than 24 hours, I now believe there is use for the term “flaming geek.”

Thanks Jack, I thought the post on social rock stars was great and got an immediate chuckle at the Flaming Geek reference. My big thing with this whole social marketing and networking buzz is unless you are a kid with nothing else to do or have a staff at your disposal to post and network, people like me who work 2 jobs, blog and raise a family have little time to keep up with all of this.

Ray,

Take heart sir. I will be bringing you ideas, tips, and tools to deal with the “time suck” social media marketing can become. I do this full time and there’s no way I can even scratch the surface of what’s possible. So we are developing and testing some tools that will help us (you) do this more efficiently and effectively.

It can be a very time consuming process but sometimes the results can outweigh the tired eyes and sore wrists. Right now, I am doing 3 case studies in preparation for a social marketing blueprint for my organization. This has made me think that maybe I should test different combinations with my case studies and see who comes out on top.

The only problem there is that each has their own personality so that’s maybe too much of a wild card. Oh boy, I see smoke coming out of my ears.

What do you think Jack? I know you’ll comment back because that’s the kind of guy you are. By the way, it was great running into you at 5 star. What an honor to have such a marketing genius among us. I’ve been learning from you for quite some time now and you just continue to amaze me.

Thanks a Bunch,
Sheree (websocialmama)
