Jack,

Great rant.

The SEO skill set, understanding all the SEO technical stuff, is really a pretty propeller head oriented culture..

Now, you got all these people flitting about making friends on Facebook. It's like the Jocks and Cheerleaders vs. the Geeks in High School. People wanna protect their turf.

Also, figuring out how to drive traffic Old School SEO, and "game" Google allowed you to make money while bypassing business fundamentals and strategies. You could work in the "shadows" without truly revealing your identity.

In order for social marketing to really work, you gotta be transparent and open with your friends, because it's your friends who carry the marketing message for you. Mixing it up in the social scene requires you be part sociologist, part psychologist. Understanding the "google" dance and tweaks, just when you thought you had 'em all figured out, is no longer as important. Suddenly, knowing "Google Geometry" isn't as cool.

Yeah, from a pure direct response marketing viewpoint, the social marketing metrics are a bit grey and fuzzy. But so is offline word-of-mouth marketing without processes and systems.

But, as a business owners, to poo-poo the trends of social marketing is rather foolish.

Social marketing, due the built in power of word-of-mouth, will reward the long-term oriented, value-driven businesses, and reveal and wipe-out the quick buck artists.

Power to the People,

Walt

Jack,

This statement was so funny, and so true:

"The WayBack Machine is unforgiving of reckless statements of the past."

Thanks for all the great articles on this blog.
