Setting Up Your WordPress Ping List

by Jack Humphrey on May 4

@AndysGoodeLife asked on Twitter this morning:

“You had in your *Blackbook* a URL for setting up ping services… any chance you have that on the top of your head?”

I realized that it would be a good post because I couldn’t remember off the top of my head what I’d linked to in the Authority Black Book.  It made me turn to Google to see what was up in the WordPress ping list world, and suffice it to say, we need an update!

All the posts on WordPress ping lists are pretty dated and the instructions for using them are super geeky.

What’s a “Ping List?”

WordPress comes with a small, default list of sites to “ping” when you make a post.  It’s kind of like tapping someone on the shoulder and saying “Hey, I have something new for you to check out.”  Google and others camp out on such sites to find new content.  Plus you can ping Google directly whenever you post by including them in your ping list as well.

To find out what/who you are pinging now, just go into your admin area and, under “Settings” find “Writing Settings.”  At the bottom of that page you will see “Update Services” and a short list of default places you are pinging when you post to your blog.

ping list

If you want to increase your reach and ping a lot more available services, then you’ll want to use the list below.  Just copy and paste the list into the Update Services area, overwriting whatever is there.  (You don’t want more than one of each URL in that list or you’ll create problems for yourself!)

Here’s the Ping List I use:

Just highlight the URLS in your Update Services, and paste the list above into the text area.

From here on out, you’ll be updating a lot more ping sites each time you post.

IMPORTANT: If you aren’t running a good ping plugin, make sure you install one to protect you from double-pinging services when you edit a post.  There is a chance you can get banned from some of the services by re-pinging even when you do simple edits to a recent post.

Jack, I’m a new blogger–one month into things. I got really excited to beef up my ping list after reading this (voted you up for this post on NetworkedBlogs, too), but…

I can’t find “Update Services” under the Writing Settings in my dashboard, or anywhere else in my WP admin. I’ve taken your suggested ping list to use when I do find where I can load it, but am feeling a bit stoopid at the moment.

Are there different versions of WP dashboard? Does it depend on the theme I use? Is there a help or search function I’m not finding that would explain more?

I could really use a bit more help on this one, Jack. Thanks!

    Ken

Great info, Jack… I'm a new blogger (one month in) and got excited to learn more about this and use your suggested ping list. Only one problem:

I'm in my WP admin dashboard, and can't find “Update Services” anywhere. Not in the Writing settings area you mention, or any of my other sections.

Help? Is there a plugin I need to do this? I already look pretty noob for asking, I know, but I'd really like to get my head wrapped around the whole ping/track-back concept.

    Thanks again,

    Ken

What version of WP are you on?

      • http://kenbgrindall.wordpress.com/ Ken Grindall

Well, Jack I never did find out a version #… because as it turns out there is a difference between the software from WordPress.org and a free hosted blog at WordPress.com… I have the latter, and it does not offer the cool manual ping list option you've shared here. I will be looking into moving the blog to a self-hosted domain soon (something planned eventually anyway), and upgrade to get this and many other options. Gracias for the info!

http://daven.se/usefulstuff/wordpress-plugins.html does not include a link to his plug in. it provides a link to another plug in that does not support version 2.0 wp blogs. Is there a similar plug in? Thanks

I thought my ping list was complete. you have way more than me. im happy i came across your site.

    What can I say but…WOW!

This is the longest ping list I've ever seen, I'm just going to copy and paste it into the 'update services' part of my blog.

I wasn't aware that if I edit a post that it gets re-pinged and could cause me major problems so thanks for letting me know about the 'good ping' plugin, I'm just going to install that too!

    Have a great day!

Jack, thanks for the updated list. Awesome!

Question: Do you not need the http:// when you post them into WP? All the ones I have in there now have the http:// in front of them, so I figured it's worth asking since yours above don't.

    • http://twitter.com/bendtheweb JackHumphrey

Yeah – sorry about that – but I didn't want a bunch of live links on the blog and I'm not sure how to make one of those text box thingies all the smart people make. So yes – I didn't think about it, but you have to put in the full URL for each. That sucks. Maybe I'll find a smart person to do the text box thing for me. :)

  • http://REItips.com jp moses

Hey, I'm curious why pingoat.com/goat/RPC2 isn't on your list?

Wouldn't it be a no-brainer inclusion? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks!

Thanks for this – I'm going to switch out my pinglists for this list, because I don't really trust the ones I have. Some ping multiple services, so I'm never entirely sure I'm not double-pinging!

Excellent, I had no idea I needed to update this list AND protect from over-pinging. I read the ‘good pluging’ post as well. My only question which I did not see an answer for: If your blog has been banned due to WP’s wacky poor pinging technique, then can you get it ‘unbanned’ with the new precautions over time? And how can you check to see whether indeed it has been banned? For me, the only WP ping service listed until today was the standard one: http://rpc.pingomatic.com/. Many many thanks!

    • http://www.jackhumphrey.com/ Jack Humphrey

@Farnoosh – To me it wouldn’t be worth it to go around to all the ping services and check to see 1. if I was banned or 2. then try to figure out how to get unbanned. They are all different services and sites owned by different people with different rules and it would be a nightmare to work through for little gain. I would just make sure your setup is proper from here on out and let the rest work itself out.

I don’t think I saw this in the comments so I wanted to let everyone know about a nice plugin that will let you know if the sites you ping are still active. The plugin is called Ping List Checker.

Hope that helps and adds to the discussion.

Hey Jack – many, many thanks for this post. I have been meaning to get around to updating my ping list for months and just did a search and your list and explanation is (as always) trustworthy and comprehensive!

Just checked through my pinging log and over half the services alerted failed during the last ping so it was definitely time for an update!

By the way, I use the UP Smart Update Pinger plugin for WordPress as an alternative to the one you recommend, which seems to be doing a pretty good job at only pinging for new posts. For pinging external content I publish on Web 2.0 properties and other repositories I sometimes visit http://pingomatic.com/ to try and get these backlinks discovered quickly.

    Thanks again and best wishes.

Nice comprehensive list, Jack. The only issue/question I have is whether there is any overlap with these services. For example, you’re pinging PingoMatic, which also pings some of the services that are also on the list. Are there any negative consequences of the potential double ping?

    • http://www.jackhumphrey.com/ Jack Humphrey

Not unless you really over do it. A double ping doesn’t seem to bother the services since it is so easy with our social networks and all the other services we use to post from our blogs to also ping about the new content. It’s when you try to hammer the ping services that they start blocking your URL.

I thought that pinging pingomatic would send pings everywhere else and avoid duplication? I had a big list, but then scaled back. Also, I just learned about the over-pining business and am just starting with MPB’s ping plugin, but I don’t show up on Technorati anywhere and have an Alexa rank of 130,000ish worldwide and have blogged for 18 months. Any idea how to get that fixed or will it happen over time once I start using the Max Press Blog plugin and stop overpinging?
