SEO Linking Strategy: Swap Content Instead of Links

by Jack Humphrey on Nov 15

I am not sure when Dan Thies wrote this page (there is a copyright at the bottom that says 2002!) but the message is as important now as it has ever been before.

If you are still doing reciprocal link exchanges, I have a better way for you to spend your time. Get a needle and slowly insert it into your hand until it comes out the other side. Repeat 1000 times.

You will find this infinitely more enjoyable than the thankless, result-less reciprocal linking you’ve been doing.

OR

Get with the times and do [tag]trackbacks[/tag], social bookmarking, social networking, and content swaps.

And don’t let me catch you asking for [tag]reciprocal links[/tag] again!

Jack,

I’ve been testing reciprocal linking on the one page of a site of mine. The site pages all had a page rank of 0 or 1.
The page I have used reciprocal linking on now has a PR3.
I have my reciprocal linking automated and yes it can be time consuming but it does still have a value along with the modern methods.

Anthony,

As long as you don’t spend a disproportionate amount of time on the process, reciprocal linking, no matter what bonuses it still has to give from search, is a good tactic for direct traffic – as long as it isn’t the only thing you do.

I just wanted to reach the folks who were doing it way more than they should be and ignoring what works really well nowadays.

Make sure you wash your needle off periodically to avoid infection. :)
