Will Google start ranking sites based on speed?
Matt Cutts dropped this little bomblet on an interview on WebProNews.  So how fast is your site?  Nevermind just keeping visitors happy.  There might be reason to speed up your site to keep or raise your search engine rankings.  More on Mashable.com.

    Hi Jack,

I love lists and this one has some good stuff like, Google’s OS Chrome and the best backup tools, and the speed of your site. I recently made minor changes to speed up the loading time of our main sites. I also installed the Thesis theme, and I am much more selective what plugins I am using.

I wanted to add a few nice touches to the site and added some scripts, and now I notice that our sites loading speed is slowed a bit. What are some things we can do besides maybe losing some of the bells and whistles… to make any blog run faster, and still keep what you want for a nice presentation? Can you get SPEED without stripping down your site, or is that impossible?

    Thanks,

    Bill

@Bill – speed is best achieved by running as few scripts and widgets as possible on your site. So first thing is to get real serious about the things you really feel you HAVE to have there for your readers.

Then look at plugins like WP Cache and others in the WordPress plugins directory designed to get your site loading faster. Sometimes you have to add something to take something away.

Some plugins make it easier for your site to load while other things in your sidebars are loading so people can get right into the content even though the page is still loading.

I need to take another look at this issue on one of my other blogs because the whole thing waits till all the things load in the sidebar before it shows anything at all.

    That’s no good!
