Chad White with Retail Email Blog has created a word tree using the subject lines of over 700 retail emails sent from Nov. 1 to Dec. 18th. This tree isn’t only super festive, it can help you craft stellar subject lines during the 2010 holiday season. It contains the 150 most commonly used words and the bigger the word on the tree, the more often it was used in subject lines.
Chad makes a good point about leveraging key words to get your message across quickly and use less common words to be unique. Often times we are in such a hurry that we just throw together our emails, but using some less common words will garner more attention.
I have seen a ton, and yes I mean a TON of emails from retailers this holiday season, and was surprised at how many came in comparison to earlier this year as well as last year. I was rather glad to see some of them because of the great sales, but more than that, without really knowing it I was watching what they were doing, and how they were leveraging their lists. Its funny, but so many retailers are not leveraging their resources.
Are you leveraging your email subscriber list? Do you have a list? If not, I highly suggest you start building one NOW! If you are looking for some ideas for subject lines, here are two great resources:
