Microsoft Offers $44.6 Billion for Yahoo

by Jack Humphrey on Feb 1

In May 2007 I wrote a piece reacting to the rumors about Microsoft buying Yahoo. The blogosphere had a heyday with the idea. The “what-ifs” were flying around practically every blog related to search industry news.

Today, Microsoft threw out an offer of $44.6 billion to buy Yahoo. Yeah, several third world countries GDP right there!

It remains to be seen if Yahoo goes for it, but the feeling on the street is that Microsoft will own Yahoo at some point. Just a matter of time.

Isn’t it nice that you knew about this almost a year before it happened? What other blogs can you read that allow you to look into the future for marketing tactics and search news? :)

Lets hope this move kicks Yahoo into action. Google is at time where it REALLY needs to see more targeted and powerful competition. Yahoo ads are STILL in beta! Microsoft is TOO slow in getting the web thing right :)

this mix of these 2 companies has me scratching my head wondering if they will birth a 3 headed calf

Another Dot Com bubble in the works. Or perhaps just the price of houses in California. Get real with these prices!

I tend to agree with Bob Cotton, although the dichotomy is that Google needs competition.

Warner Carter’s comment about the three headed calf really rings true – what will the offspring look like?

Just look at the difference between IE and Firefox…

It seems that Microsoft’s culture might create a very BIG Web 1.0 system versus a real Web 2.0 oriented system.

Even Google is bordering on the same outcome in many respects – but they do a lot of things right.

How many years will it take to ‘debug’ this new creation? Not unlike Vista versus XP. By then it may well not be competitive – or at least cutting edge – because Web 2.0 is moving so fast.

Maybe Microsoft should buy a cutting edge Web 2.0 company and leave it alone and let it grow. That company would not be Yahoo, yet that merger seems inevitable.

Maybe some of these guys are headed to the Web 1.0 Behemoth bone yard

Weird dilemma – thought provoking post.

Cheers

I wonder if this isn’t just another way for microsoft to dig its’ hands into our pockets.
They already run the majority of the operating systems(by the way IE sucks!)what will they do with the many apps. on yahoo.
