Making Money From Your Hate Mail!

Okay, so we have a Love Affair with Dooce (Heather Armstrong). We freely admit it. Here is the thing. She could teach you a thing or two about blogging. And now she can teach you a thing or two about monetization! Okay, she could have done that before too, but now she is doing something that many people have mentioned or have even contemplated but never had the guts to do. What is that you might ask?

Dooce is Monetizing her HATE Mail.

…and I’m reading an anonymous comment calling me an asshead, and suddenly I remember that conversation I had… And I’m like, you know what? I’m going to let that anonymous comment help pay for the therapy that Leta is so desperately going to need once she finds out what awful things I’ve said about her on my website.

Internet, let me introduce you to Monetizing The Hate.

Here I will be posting all the hate mail I get in my inbox and all the hateful anonymous and not-so-anonymous comments left on this website. And let me tell you, it is a hoot! And the money? OH THE MONEY! I am going to roll around naked in all that money! Because that’s what assheads do!

Also, for your convenience, I’ve added a link to this project at the top of the page in the navigation bar, so you can stop by at any time and see the artful way that insecurity unfolds via the anonymity of the Internet.

I heard a great quote on CNN today about all the hate, ignorance, and stupidity being spewed at Obama and whether or not it is more or less than toward other Presidents in history. The expert said there’s always been dumb, ignorant people full of hate, but now they have internet connections. Used to be they just sat all alone in their basements and now they have outlets for it with paid trips to DC and connections to the web.

The news channels make money off of it to the point that the radical extremes make it seem representative of “all of America” instead of a tiny fringe. It’s good that Heather is taking this approach. Haters have to be outed in every way possible including email addresses so that they get the message that there is no such thing as a truly anonymous vehicle for spewing hate and ignorance without repercussions.

The message is this: If you’re going to be one of those “anonymous” trolls, be prepared to be completely exposed for who and what you truly are. You aren’t as safe as you think you are behind flimsy anonymity protections that are easily defeated by the people you are harassing.

Great intro and I agree 100% – if anybody’s read Youtube’s comments on any subject of import (and rock music!) – I had no idea that so many rude (and often ignorant) people existed in this world.

Mind you, once Google Friend Connect becomes the norm, this situation may change for the better. Here’s hoping.
