Say you want to be President of the United States. Do you simply put your name on the ballot on election day and sweep the election? Of course not. You run for a local office, gain experience, put in work and time, and then run for state office. Again, you put in work, build your reputation, and set the stage for a House or Senate seat.
Once again, you build your reputation, serve your constituents, put in the work. Then you announce your candidacy and, by the look of things, run for office for a full 2 years through primaries, caucuses, and semingly endless trips around the country.
Hey, you wanted to be President, remember? That’s what it takes. (Don’t forget you’re going to need close to $1 billion in fundraising to win the next election.)
Seems daunting from the ground. But as you climb, you only focus on the immediate goal ahead.
One more little victory.
The same is true in online business.
If you want to have the most famous blog in your market, you don’t just set up your blog, get a couple of links, and expect the internet to stop what its doing to pay attention to your three blog posts. You work hard, prove yourself worthy to a few people, who tell some friends and so on until you’ve reached your goal.
If you want your blogto be profitable, define what that means exactly. “Profitable” could mean you netted $1 last week. It could also mean you netted $1000. But what do YOU need your blog to do to cover, say, your mortgage payment every month?
Set small goals for your daily profits from your blog and other activities. Start with goals of wiping out the equivalent of your cable bill or other smaller expenses related to running your business and household.
Get to the point here you aren’t desparate or stressed about covering your bills and you can start on the next phase, which should be adding in extras like vacations, savings, investments, or school.
Finally, cherish and praise yourself for the little victories when they happen. They are steps toward reaching your bigger goals and each one means you are that much closer!

Hey Jack, sounds like you’re ready to write a guest post for a personal development blog. How’s that for a back door invitation? Your post outlines the kind of logical, step-by-step approach that works well for so many areas of life, even for us non presidential types. So, about that other thing, what should I tell my readers?

Jonathan – tell them I will do my best as long as you keep reminding me!
@Jack, good answer, spoken like a true conversation starter. Once I join Blog Success you’ll be stuck with me, so the reminding part will be easy. Installed TweedBacks for WP and it seems to be working out well, what’s your opinion?

One step at a time. The only way.
Cherish the small victories and keep on plugging away.
Do I personify that philosophy or WHAT??!!
Thanks Jack.

Great advice Jack.
Things can seem really slow at first but once you start to see the traffic increasing little by little you know you’re starting to do things right and just need to keep chiping away at the old block.
As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and “mighty oak trees grow from acorns”.

Good advice. Our fast paced world pushes faster and faster, but at some point we need to slow down and see what we’re doing and that we are working smarter not harder. Thanks.

I hate to be the turd in the punchbowl Tom L., but two years is longer than most people can wait to have decent traffic.

lmao – “turd in the punch bowl.” I’ve never seen that recipe before!
Glad to give you a chuckle Jack! That’s what I am here for.
Gee, I thought that was a real common phrase…..That must say something about me! Oh, I am turning red! As journalists, we always referred to ourselves as the turd in the punchbowl. I guess it’s one of those TV newsisms. Everybody hates us! Boo hoo, hoo!
Guess what? I am up to #9 in google for the phrase video production. Now that EXEMPLIFIES this post about small victories. It wasn’t too long ago that I was nowhere to be found for the phrase now I am #1 in yahoo and #9 in the goo! And THAT is thanks to you and Bill.

@Lorraine – Right on sista! Keep on!
I know the little victories add up to the big ones and that has what has kept me going with my online business. Though it isn’t where I want it to be yet, I am continuing to take those little steps on the road to success – sometimes the hardest part is having the patience to make it to the finish line.
