I actually just found this while doing a search for "long tail keyword competition". I know this was written several years ago, but I figured I would comment to mention that I think that the tools have come a long way. The one I use has a long tail feature, which is helpful.

Having said that, you are still right. You need to look in your logs in addition to traditional keyword research. A combination of these plus things like using social media can help you to drive traffic to your site.

Have a good day!

Hmm, So what you are trying to say is that even if you have millions of keywords, it does not really gurantee that there will be traffic on the site?

That's because people typing in longtail tend to know what they're looking for and how to use a search engine. They become a much better targeted visit than someone finding you through the most general word in your market. That person usually has no idea what they're really looking for and aren't usually in much of a buying mood either.

I've actually got our site ranking for a few very high traffic search terms, and they have been converting at 0.04%. Whereas long tail KWP have been converting at 1.2% on average. We spent a lot less money getting ranked for the long tail, and it is making us more.

This is a problem I keep bringing up with my managers. I keep telling them that just because a term has millions of searches doesn't mean it's gonna bring in the money. But they insist. Despite earlier failures due to the same judgment. It's annoying me.

I use hittail also. This is such a killer program for any level webmaster looking to make their website a fun, unique website with relevant information.
