    Jack i think you just hit the jackpot of blogging when you said kill them sidebars for that reason it makes your content look more like publisher’s that know something about what they are talking about not to have something on the side that throw them off to make a sale,by keeping them on the subject it drives the reader more to coming back for more content.

      @Steven – Try putting your videos on clean pages. Put the image of the video in blog posts and when people click, they go to a clean page with no sidebars where you can focus them in on the text around those videos which should, of course, mention affiliate products in the same way. An, “Oh by the way” kind of thing that’s just a friendly tip for further information and resources. I bet your conversion goes up!

    That was a real fine example video just telling us the basics as they are, no frills or high end glossaries that would have us believe otherwise. However, ay you’re helping others you should in turn receive at least one link to help you in return. I applied for a product through the Yashta Search Network called thecybertable and the sister site is Admazda.com and I really didn’t understand what a $12.95 product like this could possibly do to help me, but I went ahead and purchased it. Jack, it will certainly be of some use to you as you and your members create pages for your own use. I hope you enjoy the product. It includes over 14000 Clickbank affiliate links with your Clickbank nickname, an RSS feed with same data and finally a software, which is available from your website (Clickbank Bazaar) to your visitors. My link is obviously an after payment link but it clearly demonstrates a very good product for all marketers & affiliates who have secured their accounts with ClickBank. If you buy this, you will have to open up Google Reader and ‘Add a Subscription’ to view this directory online but the overall incentives will be in your favor.       Scott – many blogger blogs rank well if the content and links to the blog are there. It’s not the ideal situation compared to a blog on your own domain (because you get more power to promote and control your blog) but lots of blogger blogs are popular enough to make it in the engines for tons of terms.

    Great content as usual BUT …

    For the sake of argument, I’d like to point out that choosing a blog for a primary web presence – and removing the distractions is somewhat of an oxymoron.

    Why wouldn’t a conventional site with theme and silo – and a blog added have more advantage? As a Mac user, I’ve found that apps like Freeway and Rapid Weaver (about 500 plugins) have RSS or any blog feature needed. They can ping all the search engines or blogs with new content without a blog’s inherent restrictions.

    Ken Evoy has a “must read” for marketers considering a blog platform – http://blogorbuild.sitesell.com/

    He also makes some profound points about how Google sees blog content: “Search Engines know that blog posts are like newspapers… good only for wrapping fish after a few days.”

    The following is a direct quote from Google Analytics 101, written by Google in April 2008…

    “Blogs usually have high Bounce Rates no matter what since normal visitor behavior is to read the newest post and then leave.”

    The oxymoron is the trend of taking a blog platform and turning it into a standard site builder. The Thesis Theme may be the best I’ve seen until this came along – http://www.affiliatetheme.net/

    Organized content with clear hierarchical navigation pattern seems to “hold” page rank – while blog content disappears as fast as it appears. Most bloggers seem to burn out feeding the blog’s never ending need for content.

    Check out Ken’s article. He makes a great argument that a blog platform is only the right choice for a very select few.

      Dave,

      First off, no one on the web has ever been more wrong about blogs than Ken Evoy. What he says sounds good to some people, but I can disprove each and every single line of that article with facts that make his attempt to save html websites (and his business) look extremely transparent and self serving. I don’t offer a webste builder, so I’m not in the same boat having to defend my dying business.

      He’s wrong about Google and there’s massive proof. My google analytics show a 2.7 page per visit average. Good blogs have that kind of reader engagement. It’s about content. And the analytics team is probably right on the money, but most blogs are not good blogs that draw readers deeper. Their statement should definitely be “most blogs” and not lump the majority in with the minority of well run and managed blogs which are some of the most popular sites on the internet! (Which disproves a huge majority of statements made by Evoy, because, by his reasoning, there is no way blogs could be the most popular and most trafficked sites on the web today.)

      If you can point to someone who agrees with Evoy who doesn’t have a vested interest in pulling the entire web back to 6 years ago, I’d LOVe to see that. What I’ve found is he is the only voice on the web touting these things.

      Note too that I didn’t tout the clean page method for anything other than focusing people in on something very specific. I’m not saying sidebar “distractions” are bad in any way used in any other application. So what I’m talking about doesn’t agree in any way with Evoy’s arguments that blogs belong in the hands of a select few.

      Finally, I would argue there is no such thing anymore of a “conventional site.” In the context people use that term, all I can ever find the majority of the time are sites that fewer people visit than the competing, well-run blog site which has all the exact same features of “conventional sites” and more.

      I don’t tell people to abandon pages. They can and should add any and all pages to their domain they wish – but the page function of blogs fulfills the hierarchy and navigation need.

      Blogs have regular updated and flowing content and they also have pages. Pages which, compared to static html pages, are built to rank and hold rank over stand alone html. Google’s love of static sites pales in comparison to live, up to date sites with activity and constant new linking to inner pages and permalinks of posts. It’s fairly evident in search today that Google wants to serve information that is fresh as much as static, evergreen information of which there is a lot less on the web.

      Their whole move to get into live search is evidence of that. Their rankings become more and more stale as the web becomes more and more lively with timely information in all niches. people want the very latest in a lot of cases and search results don’t provide it as much right now. You have to go to Blog Search to get timely information whil Google is still trying to rank a site for the same information in regular search.

      The need for information and search results that are “in the now” is being fulfilled (and traditional SERPs being bypassed) by Blog Search and news search features. People know they can get in on whats going on right now by using other tools, like Twitter Search, to find out about all topics and all conversations going on around the web.

      This is why only a fraction of the traffic to average blog sites comes from traditional search. The majority of the traffic we get on blogs is from live links, live search, and people looking for timely stuff and not stale, out-dated pages or simple disguised sales pages.

      In the end, it should be said, we bloggers don’t rely on traditional search as much as the rest of the web, and we end up getting more traffic than the majority of sites that do. With those clarifications it takes the debate from and either/or situation and places it squarely in the realm of what type of internet publishing gets the most attention no matter where it comes from.

    Thanks for the response and argument. I’m on the fence in choosing a platform and weighing all angles. I’m not the type to be shackled to creating content all the time – so I’m leaning toward Freeway and adding a blog to the site. I sure would value your opinion on this setup. I do see a lot of sites with blogs added on.

    He acknowledges the “successful blogs” throughout the article. His point is that people like you are a rare exception. It’s hard to argue against the failure rate and useless content … bloggers commenting on bloggers ect.

    And I don’t know where you are getting his “vested interest in pulling the entire web back to 6 years ago.” SBI has new modules added all the time and is way ahead of WordPress in many ways. But gets expensive for building mini affiliate sites.

    For someone like me, who wants to market affiliate products with PPC – and pick up whatever search traffic that I can – which is the best setup?

      See that’s just circular reasoning on his part though. The majority of sites on the web are somewhat to complete and abject failures. Singling out blogs and voodoo’ing the stats to make it look like blogs are the problem, when it is the majority of every endeavor online (or off) that fails to see its potential, is just wrong.

      I haven’t read that anywhere but on his site. If it were true, it would be shouted from the top of the internet by Arrington, Rowse, and hundreds of the most influential bloggers on the web today. Really consider what you’re saying – something better than wordpress would stick out on the web quite easily if that were true wouldn’t it? It would be the most popular publishing platform on the web overnight.

      I would recommend just adding wordpress to your site and be done with it. There’s no need to spend money on a platform whatsoever until someone proves he’s out pulling WordPress blogs with technology alone. That’s not nor is ever the case. Without work on the part of the owner to get links and put up good content, no technology can simply turn on SEO or social traffic.

      I think you sound smart and driven enough to not have to get by with training wheels which is what SBI is geared for. I think you already know the answer to your dilemma.

    If I had a static PPC affiliate page – and added a blog. Couldn’t that page benefit from the traffic and exposure that you described above? With the blog linking to the static page of course.

I would like to be able to update the site with news, blog posts etc but leave the home page alone, because that’s where I have my reviews.     This was a great eye opener for me. I am just beginning to think about adding affiliate marketing to my site related to quality self-help products.

    I love the clean page idea which has always made sense to me. I also like believe the subilty of a course with links at the end ( as long as the content is so good and to the point that people stay with you). I am pretty tired of screaming pages although yours (from my email) got me here, I did almost clicked off.

    Hi Jack…. Thank you for sharing this video….it was well needed!

    I have just found out I have another Blog thingy which I had shyly started a long time ago, but had forgotten about until now, so, I now have 2 to play with, one being written in (The Wealthy Nutty Nonna) and the other one is all blank (so far), as I am just a beginner with this blogging way of doing things.

    The main idea for me to blog with was to share the experiences of my life in my little corner of the world in Rural Queensland, Australia, and to show people a way to get past this negative recession mindset through a link in my info, providing they have they have the right desire and motive to change their personal & financial life.
    I don’t know if I am doing this correctly as I have never been shown and am a self-taught (and still learning) grandmama.

    Looking forward to any advice you can throw at me, if you wish to.

    That video was very informative and useful.
    Some of the key points I noticed were:
    - Focus on what’s important for the reader.
    - Eliminate the distractions.
    - Always provide great quality content.
    - Don’t link straight from your post to an affiliate product
    - Remember that the big time blogs operate under a different set of rules to the small blog sites (mainly due to traffic levels).

    I’m enthralled by the concept – and it makes such great sense to reduce the noise factor and the scammy nature. As you said a little but not too much.     Great Video! Great tips! After watching your video I can see why my blogs are not making much money. Most of my sites fall into the “party site” category.     Brilliantly presentation, but that leaves out a serious concern.
    But take the word global warming, here we are doing research for the ultimate in energy. There is umpteen no of websites fighting for this key word. Which is a no, one word we would like to get. How can one other then through backlinks get to a spot on this word? When these are all tied up by big governmental institutions that really don’t have a clue how to solve global warming or climate change? Where we have taken over the research these unmoveable parasite stand , and now they do nothing but talk and don’t concern themselves with small research and pass the money between their friends ignore any effort by anyone else.

    I usally only click the links and then delete them once the timer
