Using trackbacks to get more links and traffic

by Jack Humphrey on Dec 2

blogging softwareExactly how to use trackback posts to get links from other bloggers and sites that use trackbacks.  Trackbacks are more powerful than commenting on someone’s blog because they use the title of the post you link to them with as the link back to your site.

Instead of signing a direct comment, which becomes the link to your site, with “Jack Humphrey,” a trackback link to your site will include your post title which should have keywords in it you are trying to score for in the engines.

So a post I make about “Blog Marketing” which includes links to other bloggers’ posts on the topic, this will return links to my blog marketing post with the anchor text:  Blog Marketing.  Very cool.  Very effective.

This video will explain it all and you will be doing a trackback in a matter of minutes from watching, I promise!

Good video. However I’d like to have a trackback url on my blog and when I click “trackback url” I get nothing.

So I clicked “trackback url” on your blog and also get nothing. Well by nothing I mean the same page i was on, no trackback url is visible.

    Hi Jack,
This is great, I have been wanting to learn about TrackBacks. Your tutorial makes it simple and easy to understand. I am going to try it, and see if I can get some results with using TrackBacks.

    Thanks!

Thanks for putting together the informative video. You’re a great resource.
I missed one thing however… When I make a TrackBack how do I know if it was accepted? Hopefully this is not too dumb of a question for you. Does a bell ring? Do I get a text message on my cell phone? Will my dog bark?

    Thanks Again,

    Craig

  • http://www.jackhumphrey.com/cd Jack Humphrey

    Craig,

Nothing happens – not even a dog bark. You have to manually click to the site and check if your trackback was accepted – they are moderated just like comments on most blogs to keep spammers for getting a million links a second with no moderation.

I frequently do trackbacks and don’t even check if they are accepted anymore. There’s nothing you can do if they aren’t, so it got to be a waste of time worrying about someone not accepting a trackback – seems more their problem than mine and I don’t have time to counsel people on accepting good trackbacks. Just move on to the next one, I say.

I am currently researching all of the “Web2.0″ methods of building traffic to a website.
I think there is no doubt that trackbacks, when written for the honest purpose of giving the author their props while promoting high quality content on your site must be an effective marketing method. I have recently been running several tests using stumbleupon, but as soon as I’m finished I am going to run some tests using trackbacks to a couple of well respected blogs that I frequent. Jack, should you read this, thank you for explaining this concept; I am amazed that in the 100′s of hours of research I’ve been doing, there hasn’t been 1 tutorial on using trackbacks.

How many minutes, hours or days does it take for the other blogger to receive notification of the trackback? Does being a new blog put one at a disadvantage, because of less frequent spidering by the search engines? Or does pinging Technorati simply get the job done? Then how long does it take? Thanks in advance.

  • http://www.jackhumphrey.com/cd Jack Humphrey

    Hero,

It is as instant as an email. Using their trackback link you are pinging them and they get an email right away that someone has made a comment, just like regular comments, and that they need to moderate it.

    Hi Jack,

Based on my test, you DON’T have to put in trackback URL. I believe current version of WP automatically attempts to ping the other WP site, as long as you insert the blog’s link in the body. This option is on by default in WP.
