Using trackbacks to get more links and traffic

by Jack Humphrey on Dec 2

blogging softwareExactly how to use trackback posts to get links from other bloggers and sites that use trackbacks.  Trackbacks are more powerful than commenting on someone’s blog because they use the title of the post you link to them with as the link back to your site.

Instead of signing a direct comment, which becomes the link to your site, with “Jack Humphrey,” a trackback link to your site will include your post title which should have keywords in it you are trying to score for in the engines.

So a post I make about “Blog Marketing” which includes links to other bloggers’ posts on the topic, this will return links to my blog marketing post with the anchor text:  Blog Marketing.  Very cool.  Very effective.

This video will explain it all and you will be doing a trackback in a matter of minutes from watching, I promise!

    FINALLY!!!

I now understand trackbacks. Been to so many other sites that (try to) explain it.
… am copying the video, will post on my WP blog, & do a TB to this post.

BTW: where’s your TB link?? – no trackback url is visible (1st comment).

Thanks Jack. This is a good bit of information on trackbacks. In the course of this little training piece, I have launched my first trackback.

Great post on trackbacks, Jack. I have to get with my team and find out if they’re doing this right! We’ve been blogging for a little over a year and don’t have much of a page rank, so I’m wondering if sites I’m linking to care much about getting links from my ‘little old blog’?

Thanks for the excellent content, Jack.. I’ve been considering using this technique but didn’t know where to start. Now I know … and you’ve also provided additional back link resources as well.

Hi Jack, firstly i would like to thank you for this amazing blog post. It really helped me, though i already had imagined that trick. Still, you enhanced my optimism and taught me some of the values that go together with this comment-trick.
    Continue your great work

This post rocks, I never knew how to do a trackback before or what the purpose was.. thanks for explaining how it works. I see the power of this technique now and will have to put it to use but I heard of trackback spam and that is why I shut it off on mine I was getting alot of spam comments so I figured that would just add to it.. how can I cut out trackback spam? Are there wordpress plugins for this?

    Thanks
    Rob

The only way to safely cut trackback spam is to moderate it out of your comments. At least that’s how I do it. It is practically impossible for software to determine this kind of spam reliably without catching legitimate links as well.

I really appreciate the video. You have done a tremendous job in explaining trackbacks. I’ve been to other places that did not explain it as clearly as you did. Thank you very much! I am very new in the blogosphere and will be using trackbacks on my credit repair blog. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing this. I never really knew the benefit of using this feature. It didnt seem to do anything for me. But I agree that WordPress is very search engine friendly and you also need to use your own hosted WordPress blog, not one hosted by WordPress themselves.

In my naivety I had just assumed that trackbacks appeared automatically whenever you linked to another post in one of your own. Thanks for opening my eyes.

I hadn’t realised how useful they could be either. Backtrack SEO has been quite a learning experience for me.

A strategy I have been using is to get my current customers to become affiliates.
Then I offer them 100% commissions. This works for me because I have a membership site but the structure could
work well if you are trying to build a big list. I wrote a article on my results. You can read it here.
