Google Testing Social Search Results?

by Jack Humphrey on Jul 16

Chris Lang has been watching Google and Digg like a hawk. He has consistently been ringing the bell in the tower, telling people to watch for a Google – Digg buyout.

Today he posts that Google is testing giving surfers the ability to vote on search results! I had all but forgotten my early bell ringing over a year ago that Google might try something like this to become more “socially relevant” in Web 2.0.

People shot it down with replies and posts saying that if it happened it would be the end of Google and the trust they’ve built up in the market for having decent ranking ability.

Looks like they’ve got an idea about how to avoid problems like that and are going ahead with testing social search.

If you think this is good technology check out the new social search engine released by Me.dium. Instead of having to vote on results, this search engine serves up websites that are most relevant based on past click streams and visits. It shows things like how long the average time spent on a website is, how many people are on the site at the time, and how hot the site is currently. Me.dium uses past searches from people that are associated with the company, i.e have toolbars, or social sidebar to compile their results.

Me.dium’s Social Search, which leverages the Yahoo! Search BOSS platform, provides an entirely new level of information on top of traditional search. Me.dium’s Social Search harnesses the activity of the crowds to let you find information that has relevance based on what people are actually surfing right now.

Me.dium’s technology lets the inherent activity of real people – not robotic crawlers – determine relevance. Me.dium’s Social Search results show what people are surfing and find interesting, right now. While other search engines base relevance on how content links across pages, Me.dium’s Social Search shows you the most popular news, reviews, pictures and videos that other people are actually looking at in relation to your search term. And as the activity of the people online changes, so do the search results.

This is insane! It will be interesting to see if Digg gets bought out…if not, we may be saying goodbye to Digg in the future perhaps?

I just wanted to clarify, because it is a little confusing, that Me.dium search produces search results based on where people are surfing at the current moment.
