Bear in mind also the acquisitions that Yahoo have made over the past few years, Flickr being the most prominent that I recall, this could be about more than just the Yahoo/Google battle.

I just don't see Y as an MS property. Y still represents the free geeky spirit of the Internet in my opinion. Would be a big shame if a software giant would eat them up.

If Microsoft take over Yahoo a lot of the changes will take place "under the hood." They will share and merge the search engine technology and importantly Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly Overture) and Microsoft's Adcentre. Having used these services and Google Adwords, Microsoft and Yahoo have a lot to do to get their advertising platforms as good as Google's. Google needs more competition in the Pay Per Click market.

It would be crazy to do away with powerful brand names. "Yahoo!" is one of the most powerful brands on the internet. Bear in mind Microsoft retained the "Hotmail" brand after acquisition.

I've had a Yahoo account for something like ten years . . . long enough my email address is my real name. I enjoy using their email service, their MyBlogLog service, and even belong to a couple Yahoo groups. I built my first website on their Geocities platform.

I really dread the idea of Microsoft getting their claws in Yahoo and if they do, I wonder if all the things I love (including the name) will be swallowed into Microsoft's character-free universe.

The Times is reporting that New's Corp are interested in Yahoo and may swap MySpace in return for Yahoo in addition to taking a larger stake in the enlarged group

Not being a shareholder I don't get the fun of choosing which unsightly alliance I vote for. Google and Microsoft are way too big as it is. I'm just irritated and a tad nostalgic that Yahoo, an old friend is in trouble and being hunted by Microsoft.
