    Hi Jack

I’m caught in the middle of a BIG debate here.

Do you have view on Google ‘Sandboxing’? Some folks claim that if you get lots of links into a new site quickly it will cause Google to think ‘cheat!’ and stick your site in the supplementary index for a few months. (The infamous ‘sand box’.)

True? Not true? Either way you’ll have a ton of evidence from so many start-up authority sites on your system, so you’re going to have come across this issue.

    Your view?

Enjoying / profiting from your content as ever.

(And yes, we’ll do that ‘Famous Jack’ interview soon :) )

    Jonathan,

The term “lots of links” is the problem. It matters what KIND of links those are. Social links in Twitter, etc. or from a lot of bloggers who pick up a hot story on your site and link to it – no sandbox.

A bunch of directory links? Easy for Google to see that big increase and do something, if they want. But I don’t think it’s an across the board trigger.

A good method is to have a killer linkbait piece at the same time you’re getting a lot of social buzz to mix in the links from directories all at once.

The more “legit” links mask the more seo’d links and it looks like someone just got a big bunch of attention from the sphere.

I don’t hear about the sandbox much anymore from our new site builders. They are pretty much building links like mad without any noticeable penalty.

This would be the first time in many months anyone has asked a sandbox question. That has to count for something. Back when Google was sandboxing right and left, I could see 5 or more q’s a day on the issue, easy.

That’s a pretty clear view on the ‘lots of links’ sandbox issue thanks. Social reaction and ‘legit’ links makes sense. Re linkbait – we only ever use original content, so that is starting to look like a no brainer. All good.

    Thanks
    Jonathan
