I can relate and I feel this is the best approach because this is what happened with one of my niche specific blogs - the blog gets on average about 30,000 people a month from various countries - and believe it or not its not where I spent most of my time...I did just like you mentioned - I just let it happen and didn't worry about it. In comparison to the blogs where I spend most of my time and efforts this blog beat it by a landslide...
