Chris Lang: Pro Blog Commenting Traffic Tips

by Jack Humphrey on May 25

Chris is at it again. These kinds of tactics just keep popping up over at Lang’s site. I highly recommend following this guy around for real – because his free stuff is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Just the thing to forward to a client of mine who’s just starting to blog for business! She doesn’t see the value in visiting blogs in her industry and leaving comments, but this is a great illustration.

Great tip. Such a simple idea, but one that I find is hard to sell to (especially to small clients) because of the time involved. Would love to know what useful resources people use to find the best blogs to comment on?

    @Heidi,

Jack is right, Blogsearch is the best place to start. To easily get to it from any web search click the “more” link on any Google search page, then click “blogs” from the drop down menu.

But what you want to look for is a blog with interactivity and a responsive host. Depending on your product you have to decide what level of information the blog publishes and if it fits your style and voice.

My products are very tech oriented, but you have to decide who is buying your product, where do they hang out and where is a receptive audience going to be.

I did not post on Scoble’s blog to sell product or get links and traffic. I posted on Scoble’s blog to target Scoble as a contact. I ended up hitting a home run. I wanted to help Scoble and help his readers.

I have tried the same thing on Cnet, WebProNews and others to no avail. Scoble is secure in his own place in things and my comments do not threaten him. He will always be bigger than me. Hence I feel secure that I am not invading his space. We do not compete for the same buyer. So it worked out well.

When you can find that sort of blog you will get the same results I did. Hope that makes sense and helps you find your voice in commenting and a receptive audience for your own branding.

At the same time Jack has helped me from day one, even letting me test my first social marketing product on SMC a year ago. What I learned there helped me to sell even more product on my own sites. People like Jack and Scoble are rare. Andy Beard is another writer that is so big that my contributions do not threaten him.

But if you look at the Scobleizer.com post you will see that there were a few very negative comments toward me. In the old days I would have dove right in and taken the bait and hurt my reputation. I am now a wiser and more skilled Chris Lang and I totally bypass these opportunities, wasting of my time and effort. Jack has taught me well.

Thanks to all for the good words.

I hate these twitter posts appearing in “comments” – they’re so SPAMMY.

      Andrew – How so?

In my browser I presently see 12 variations on “Chris Lang: Pro Blog Commenting Traffic Tips http://bit.ly/16i1St

Andrew – but they are on the bottom for one. Additionally, it’s a great reward for people who Tweet about FTR stuff. All the on-site comments show up first and these are no different than listing trackbacks which most pro blogs do. At least that’s how I see it. As long as they don’t get in the way of conversation on site, what’s the big deal?

    re: Jack
It’s no big deal but seeing it for the first time, it did look spammy.
