Blogging Secret – Go the other way…

by Jack Humphrey on Dec 17

What’s one of the biggest secrets to blog success?

You are constantly told to research your niche to see what everyone is interested in.  All good bloggers do this.  They keep tabs on what their readers (along with the readers of other blogs) are saying and asking.  And they decipher those pleas for help or information to produce what they think will help (or entertain) their readers most.

This is a good thing.  Do this.  A lot.

But remember you aren’t going to win a football game by running the same exact plays as your competitors.  Whatever the hot topic is in your niche now (the thing readers are going ga ga over on other blogs) the biggest potential for you is the next trend.

While a good portion of your niche seems all caught up in the topic of the day, your job is to get ready to be a part of, or even set, tomorrow’s topic.

Your job is to see what’s coming next, go the other way, and come out with posts that aim to captivate readers tomorrow who are caught up in something else today.  All the other bloggers will simply be linking to yesterday’s hot topic while you’re setting the stage for the next one.

This is very true; what do you suggest is the best way to find these future trends. I guess just keeping up with the news would do it – google news alerts on your niche..and see what they’re talking about…..what other ways do you suggest Jack?

    Thanks!

Ruben – yes, keeping up with the feeds in your niche, products and services, companies, Google Alerts. Doing so gives you an overall perspective few others in your niche will have. Be an information overlord!

    Great advice Jack,

This post reminded of an ant story I heard the other day.

A group of scientists found an entire colony of ants who had managed to form a giant circle, following each other round & round… they all died off in a few days time, accomplishing nothing but meticulously following each other.

Us marketing folks, especially the greener variety, can be like those ants… following each other but never establishing a genuine voice (or product, or service, etc) because of being too busy trying to keep up with the loop.

Ignoring the pack for a while can be enlightening as well as time-freeing…
