A site isn't helping you if it is only helping you in the engines. And it is very hard to tell if a site is going to help you in the engines, which is why I completely ignore linking for just search engines when looking for links. Links are for direct traffic. Any resulting search engine love you get is a by product of that effort.

The way to tell if a site is helping you is if it is sending you traffic. Period. If you go after ALL links with the expectation of getting traffic from those links, or participation in certain social sites, then the goal of search engine rankings is accomplished by default.

No traffic or little traffic means I don't spend as much time on a given site and keep looking for the sites that deliver targeted, buying, subscribing prospects from my participation, through my links.

You'll find your core sites, and every site in that core has to be sending you traffic in relation to the amount you are participating on that site. If that isn't there, forget whatever it MIGHT be doing for you in the engines - it isn't worth it!

These are a lot of sites to hit and it can be time consuming. I've been trying to do more commenting in the blogosphere in the hopes that it will turn into more backlinks and authority for my sites. I'm currently using probably 7 of the 10 sites you list, but I'm not sure if they are helping me out or not. Is there any way to tell?

thanks for that comment. There are so many, and when you are the only one building your business your time can be spread too thin, and uneconomically if you try everything.

You are definitely right about Facebook. The most important thing there, is to add your RSS feed under NOTES. Just look for the "import feed" link in the top right under your notes module.

Why? Because Facebookers search current topics within Facebook and can find you thru your feed topics. I have 200 friend requests from last weeks weeks buzz on Google and Digg simply because FB has my RSS feed in their history and I come up as the most recommended friend under that topic.

I am also one of those (clamorers) at Social Marketing Central. See you there Jack. And read you email today...
