10 Bloggers You Should Follow on Twitter

by Jack Humphrey on Dec 29

I have come up with an entirely arbitrary and subjective list of 10 social and blog marketing experts you should follow on Twitter.  To the people I left off the list, I am sorry.  The arbitrary number of 10 restricts me from adding everyone to the list.

But, that’s what the comments field is for.  Tell me who I missed and why I’m an idiot for leaving them off the list!

(Links open in a new tab so you don’t have to go back and forth to follow everyone on the list!)

1.  WebSuccessDiva: Maria Reyes-McDavis is my pride and joy of 2008.  I take full credit for “discovering” her and telling people to watch her throughout ‘08.  :)   Of course, my innate ability to pick winners was proven once again as Maria tsunamied onto the scene and became a respected, well-known force in the social marketing and blogging tips world.

2.  Darren Rowse: “ProBlogger” is one of the most helpful and closely followed people in the blogging world.  He’s also gracious and willing to spend time on things like Webside Chats to reach out to new audiences and help more people.  Darren is the quintessential example of a pro blogger.

3.  Chris Brogan: Social media marketing gooroo extraordinnaire!  Follow him and read his blog.  That’s an order.

4.  Liz Strauss: A poem for LizLiz loves social media.  It’s plain for all to see.  Following her on Twitter means more traffic for you and me!

5.  Mari Smith: This lady will teach you about being a Twitter-holic and using Twitter to the Nth degree to develop a serious following.

6. Lee Odden: The man behind Top Rank and someone you should definitely be following on Twitter.  He’s kind of a big deal.

7.  Aaron Wall: Of SEOBook fame, this is one of my favorite bloggers who taught me just how far a good piece of linkbait can take you!

8.  Matt Mullenweg: More than kind of a big deal, this guy is the founding developer of Wordpress (bow to your leader, people) and goes by the name of @photomatt on Twitter.  Check out his blog.  Check the domain.  Check the pagerank.  The only time Google Pagerank really matters is when you have one like this!  (PR8 for those who are Google toolbar impaired)

9.  CopyBlogger: Brian Clark is a former lawyer.  That should tell you how blogging ranks these days.  There are a lot of “formers” who are big time bloggers now.  Here’s to you becoming a former yourself!

10.  DoshDosh: One of those bloggers you hate because he’s always cranking out detailed, extremely helpful content for bloggers.  Well, maybe it’s just me, but I love to hate DoshDosh.

Well, who did I miss?

Oh yes!  Follow me!

Thanks for the list.

I would love to see a list of lesser-known people who should be followed, since most of these folks have thousands or tens of thousands of followers already and thus don’t really need the exposure.

Chris – I would have checked you out on Twitter but you left your site link rather than your Twitter link. Remember to make it easy to find out more about you depending on the context. In this context, your Twitter link would have been the very best since people reading this are in the Twitter mood. The extra step of going to your blog and looking for your Twitter link will turn most people off. (And yes, a list of lesser-knowns would be cool!)

That’s quite a list Jack and I am humbled to be included. Thank you so much.

I agree with the comment above from Chris Lockwood in so far that most of the names mentioned in your list are well established bloggers and who you could say the large majority are social media ‘rockstars’. How about a few lesser known names from the blogosphere looking to get recognised?

I’d like to also draw your attention to the Twitter authority debate going on here – Interested to hear your thoughts –

I would like to humbly submit that I am an enviromental blogger (formerly, power engineer) and I feel that with the coming year we will hear a lot about renewable energy sources. I blog about renewable energy sources, what they bring to mankind and what we can do with the electricity generated. President (elect) Obama has come out for renewable energy as a way to generate a couple of million ‘green’ jobs, you will hear a lot about this subject in the coming year. I use a squidoo lens along with social sites to ‘advertise’ my blog. The squidoo site is http://squidoo.com/solarpower5 and I am fairly new to the web in any case. Check me out, you might want to add me to your next list.:)

Thanks Jack for the good Bloggers on Twitter. Following some, and now will be following the others.

Like you have said, I run hot and cold with Twitter, but maybe that has something to do with who you are connecting with.

Love David’s comment about acting the same way you do at a party!

This is an addendum to my earlier comment (12/29/08) in order to apologize for my typo, ‘environmental’. Sorry as I age my typing is going:) I also neglected to say that I really like Darren of problogger and I follow him on twitter, I’ll have to start following the others as well. You are so right when you say a lot of bloggers are former something or other. As I said in my earlier comment I am a former engineer, although I actually write about environmental engineering so I am technically still working as an engineer. Thanks for the list, see you around the galaxy.

Excellent post man… already following a couple of these but it’s great to get tips from the pro’s so to speak. Good to see an Aussie is right up there in the blogging world too, I would love to emulate his success.

Kind regards, Clayton.

Ta for the direction.
I’m getting lost in the ‘fresh meat’ scenario! It is confusing who to follow and who to reciprocate with follow’s?
Trying to sort the wheat from the chaf but also find people who are interesting just ‘cos they are and not trying to sell you anything.. it is fun and I like playing with my Twitter :)

Jack,

I just found you via Utterli. Great stuff here. I’d add our blog at http://impactinteractions.blogspot.com/ as a resource for your followers. With over nine years of helping large organizations with their social media/online communities and measurement, we provide a lot of free best practices that just might help your audience avoid making mistakes.

Thanks again.

@lemonpoof (that name just makes you smile) re: playing with Twitter – I’ve found a lot of great marketing value while simply “playing” with social media with no direct purpose at the moment. Sometimes you just have to let yourself surf and play like regular internet users to find interesting and useful things that can help you as a marketer.

So didn’t I just read a post about no one being a social media expert ? ;-)

Someone I’d recommend anyone reads is Danny Brown

He was one of Chris Brogans’s 8 Marketing Bloggers to Watch in 2009 – I checked out his blog on Chris’s recommendation and I have not been disappointed yet.

Mind you, when has Chris ever been wrong? :)

Great list I was following more than half of those already but you did include a couple that I was unaware of ty for the list.

Ron Morrison Nov 14 at 8:10 am

Jack, great idea to put this together. There are so many new socialmediaites (perhaps me included) that need to know who the tops are. The best of the best. I’d offer that you could also include @missrogue (Tara Hunt) and @jasonfalls (Jason Falls).

I’ll definitely share this your list with a couple of market verticals that are struggling to get caught up in the twisting torrential tower of twitter leaders! Thanks!
